Women in the Alt (working title)

MANIFESTO

Would you fight for a cause that takes away your rights?

SYNOPSIS

In recent years, we’ve seen a global resurgence in the alternative right. Numbers are climbing, from conservatives with unconventional views to neo-Nazi groups. It’s most obvious in America - (comfortingly) halfway around the world. But if you think the alt-right isn’t growing in Australia, you haven’t been paying attention.

A young female documentarian can’t understand why Australian women would fight to have the freedom - that others fought so fervently for - taken away. From extreme anti-vaxxers and flat earthers to anti-abortionists and ‘tradwives’, this documentary examines the spectrum of women who identify with the alt right.

The piece considers the influence of the internet, which exploded the potential to connect like-minded people and create new ways of indoctrinating outsiders, including children as young as 11.

This documentary was the proud recipient of a Blackbird Protostars Grant - funding the passion projects of young people (18-25) in Australia and New Zealand.

ACTIVISM

The alt right isn’t just on a video on your social media. It’s in your home city. On the computer of your neighbour. It’s time we understood the alt right movement in Australia.
